How Is Steel Made In A Steel Factory?
Steel is the backbone of a nation’s economy. From the 18th century onwards, steel has become an important part of some major industries. Tagged as the world's premier engineering and construction alloy, the importance of the steel produced from steel factory cannot be understated. In all aspects of our lives, we use steel. For example, steel in auto parts, in the construction industry, various products such as refrigerators, washing machines, etc.
After knowing its
importance, we often wonder how steel is manufactured in a steel factory.
So in this blog, we
will tell you about the methods by which steel is produced these days in the
factory.
Steel is produced with
the help of either of the two ways mentioned below.
Blast Furnace – This process is also known as Basic Oxygen
Processing (BPO), which combines raw iron ore with small amounts of scrap steel
in a furnace. Subsequently, pure oxygen is injected into the furnace. This
process raises its temperature. The iron oxide impurities are oxidized and thus
completely evaporated in the whole process. Also, at this temperature, the
scrap melts into a liquid. In addition, the temperature helps to reduce the
carbon content and bring it to the ideal proportion point; therefore, the
result is liquid steel. The first blast furnace entered in the 14th century and
produced one ton per day.
Electric arc furnaces- Currently, about a quarter of the
steel produced in the world is produced with the help of electric arc furnaces.
In this method, high-current electric arcs from the electrodes help melt a
large amount of scrap steel into liquid. Technicians working in the factory
also add ferroalloys to it until the desired ratio of steel to other alloys is
achieved. For example, chromium and nickel form stainless steel. To purify the
steel, the furnace injects oxygen, and then lime and fluorspar are added. When
all the impurities are combined, they float to the top of the molten steel,
where they are removed, leaving pure steel behind.
These are the modern
ways of producing steel. It started around 1856. And the process is known as
the Bessemer process. At that time, it was considered the first process to
produce steel and helped in the mass production of steel. There were two
inventor producers, one in the UK and one in Pittsburgh, who helped develop a
steelmaking process that involved removing impurities from the iron using air
blasting.
Custom steel
fabrication and design in steel warehousing are very important as it leads companies to
develop new and useful products that can help improve our daily lives. From the
manufacture of the steel to its design, a wide range of experts and technicians
are required. Designers, engineers, welders, metalworkers, and installers,
every expert plays an important role in converting a metallic material into
high-quality components properly designed to meet various market needs.
